Karangasem, The East of Bali

Karangasem is a city which is located in east part of Bali. Actually, I have never know about this city, but I feel lucky that when I was KKN (Kuliah Kerja Nyata) or it can be said one of course in the university and I spend a couple of months in this city. I feel so enthusiastic and grateful because to explore this city is one of my dream. When I was lived in this city, I found a thing that become the special characteristic of this city. It’s called “Megibung” in Balinese.

Balinese culture is unique. One of the things that always attracts the attention of tourists is the Megibung Tradition. This culture has become one of the traditions that the Karangasem people continue to maintain. In fact, it has become one of the popular cultural tours in Bali.

The tradition of Megibung Karangasem can be interpreted as an activity carried out by the community by gathering and sitting together and share the foods. Or it also can called a tradition of eat together in one place which is always do by the people in Karangasem, Bali.

In this Megibung tradition there is no difference in social status or caste, everyone mingles and eat together. Megibung is now often encountered during processions of traditional and religious ceremonies in Karangasem. As in the Dewa Yadnya Ceremony, the Pitra Yadnya Ceremony, the Bhuta Yadnya Ceremony, the Rsi Yadnya Ceremony, the Manusa Yadnya Ceremony, the Tooth Cutting (Mesangih) Ceremony, Marriage, and Ngaben.
